How an
IVF refund program works

Each program is a little bit different, but in general, here is how it works:

1.      You must qualify for participation in the program.  Usually, this phase requires some diagnostic work which is not part of the program.  You will likely be responsible for these charges whether you are accepted to an IVF refund program or not.  Some of these costs may be covered by insurance.

2.      If you qualify, you will pay a fee for a number of IVF attempts.  Each center is slightly different, but often it is 3 IVF attempts.

3.      If your treatment is successful, as defined by the program, (often fetal heart-beat, 12 weeks gestation, take-home baby, etc.), then your program is complete.

4.      If you treatment is not successful, then you will be refunded the portion of investment (often 90% to 100% of certain costs, typically not drugs) as defined by the program.

As a result, recognize that if you are successful on your first or second attempt, you likely overpaid in comparison to traditional fee-for-service IVF.  But, this “overpayment” can be thought of as an “insurance premium” for money back, in the event your treatment is not successful.
